Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs - 3D Review

So the 3D revolution roles on and on, This time its the threequel to the brilliant Ice Age. The old faces returned with slightly more CGI'ed detail and are joined by Simon Pegg voiced Buck, who liked Puss in Boots in Shrek 2, steals the film and runs away with all the funniest lines.

The story is simple. Manny and Ellie are expecting their first child and looking to settle down. Diego is beginning to lose his edge as a sabretooth and Sid begins to feel left out. Inevitably Sid gets himself into some serious trouble by adopting some baby dinosaurs and then being abducted by their less than pleased mother. The rescue mission begins and Ice Age is back in familiar territory. The standout moments though, once again come from Scrat, who this time meets Scratte, a female squirrel and a silent, adorable and hilarious love story develops over the course of the film.

The film has a slow start and doesn't really fully get into gear until the rescuec mission begins, the unlikely tribe having to descend below the ice to a hidden world where Dinosaurs rule. The film offers so fantastic, franchise highpoints, chase sequences, and by introducing Buck, the film benefits from an injection of new blood and great humour, even if Buck resembles an animated weasel Capt Jack Sparrow.

The film really makes the most out of the 3D with some eyepopping animation and some great set pieces. Although the film lacks the originality and the endearing quality it still manages to trade on some relieably funny characters and the mixmatched nature of the personalities never suffers from Pegg's Buck being thrust into focus.

Unlike other franchises such as Shrek, Ice Age feels much stronger and still seems to be able to get humour from a tried and tested structure. The film may be a little too long, and could have done with getting into the action sooner, but once its there its a fantastic ride which is just as enjoyable for children (maybe more so) and adults alike.
